Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing and interpreting data in order to make a decision. Descriptive Statistics is divided into three parts Measure of Central Tendency, Measure of Spread, Measure of Shape. In this article we are going to study measure of central tendency.
Measure of Central Tendency is a single value that attempts to describe a set of data by identifying the central position within the set of data.
Mean is the average of group of measurement and every data point has an effect on Mean. It is the balance point or gravity center of the data points.
Mean is easily affected by a change in magnitude of any of the data points.
Median is the value separating higher half from the lower half of a data sample. In other words, it’s the positional average and refers to the middle value in a distribution
Mode is the most frequently occurring value in the dataset.
Eg :- Feedback form
Mode = Satisfied, as the frequency of satisfied is most frequently occurred in the data.
APPLICATIONS:
- Mean:
- In Every college, average salary package is displayed using the mean. Adding every student CTC and dividing it by the batch strength.
- In Cricket, A players batting average is recorded with the help of mean by calculating the runs scored in each match and dividing it by the total number of matches he played in that format.
- Figuring out distance, time and cost for travel.
- Median:
- In order to find the performance of a cricketer where his worst and best performance can be ignored to give his consistent performance.
- In data science, It is used to remove the outliers from the data that can manipulate the average.
- Mode:
- In order to find the favorite subject of the students, mode is used to detect the most frequently chosen subject by student.
- In E-commerce website the most bought product (Top selling) is recommended to us while shopping. Streaming websites always displays their top grossing movies or most watched series using mode.
